What is SGA/Student Government?
The Student Government Association (SGA) of Sierra Nevada University is the student government organization. The SGA Officers and SGA Senators are elected every spring semester or appointed by the current student government to fill vacancies.
The elected positions are:
Director of Communications
The appointed positions are:
Director of Events
What does it mean when you say Director of Events and Treasurer have appointed positions rather than elected? Why?
Because these positions work so closely together, the current Executive Board appoints these two positions. Candidates apply for these positions like any other member, but instead of being voted for by the school, they are interviewed by the current Board who then votes on whom they think should hold the position. SGA chooses to do this to ensure compatibility within the board.
What does SGA do for the student body?
We aim to approve student life and serve in the best interest of the student body and see ourselves as advocates for all students. We work with the administration, faculty, and staff to make sure that your ideas are heard.
SGA hosts fun events like the Halloween Dance, Spring Formal, Casino Night, Six Flags Trip, and Midterm Pancake Study Break.
We also work with the community and sponsor events like an SGA Blood Drive and Flu Shots.
SGA funds SGA-approved clubs and student initiatives.
How do I join the SGA?
Any student at SNU is eligible to run for election to the SGA as long as they meet the following requirements:
Executive Board: All Executive Board members be a full-time student with a minimum of 12 credits and cannot be on academic or disciplinary probation. The SGA President and Vice President must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and higher. The SGA Treasurer, Director of Communications, Sustainability Chair, and Director of Events must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Senate: The SGA Senators must full-time students with a minimum of 12 credits, must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and cannot be on academic or disciplinary probation.
Where are meetings and who can attend?
SGA meets every Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM on the second floor of Campbell-Friedman Dorms. Our meetings are open to all students and faculty. Please let us know in advance if you would like an item to be included in our weekly agenda by the Wednesday before the meeting.
I don’t want to be IN the SGA, but I would like to be involved/ I have an idea to pitch or concern to be addressed.
What can I do?
You can start a club! See the Clubs page to download a Club Packet and get more information.
You can also volunteer at our events and you are always welcome to voice your opinion, comment or idea to any SGA members.
We are always looking for students with different skills that we can utilize!
Also, you can contact each and every board member by emailing their SGA-email. You can find these on the "Meet the Team" page.
If there is anything else you are wondering about, scroll down to the bottom of our page and you'll find a FAQ box that sends an email directly to SGA!
